I caught the trailer for this (thanks youtube, I had no idea it existed!) and am really looking forward to it. My PS pals can probably understand why I was so excited to see Halston Sage’s face on a trailer cover. :D I am a little confused though about its existence...as far as I can tell, it isn’t having a theater release and is out already, but it’s also not streaming on any major platform? I can only find it for sale or rent through places like Prime. Which maybe explains my total lack of awareness that it was made but also seems rude--it’s got such a good cast and such throwback romcom vibes!

I've never seen Legs again. The rest of us, we've drifted. But we embrace when we meet, veterans of a sort.
Bound together for life.

365 Day Movie Challenge (2019) - #49: Foxfire (1996) - dir. Annette Haywood-Carter (52 Films by Women 2019: #10)
Adapted by Elizabeth White from the novel of the same name by Joyce Carol Oates, the coming-of-age drama Foxfire is a well-directed, if narratively messy, feature fueled by some strong acting and a good soundtrack. Hedy Burress portrays the protagonist, Maddy Wirtz, a mostly quiet teenager who forms a lifelong bond with three other girls at her school - Rita Faldes (Jenny Lewis), Goldie Goldman (Jenny Shimizu) and Violent Kahn (Sarah Rosenberg) - when a mysterious stranger known only as “Legs” (Angelina Jolie, charismatic and compelling in one of her breakout roles) arrives on campus one day and, apropos of nothing, encourages them to punish a sexually abusive teacher (John Diehl) for his actions. Naturally, the principal (Richard Beymer) suspends the rebellious students, but they soon band together with Legs and become legendary among their peers for fighting back against the men and boys who have tried to control them.
Certain elements of the plot are presented far too melodramatically, including one character’s sudden descent into heroin addiction and an impulsive kidnapping incident that leads to attempted murder. The movie also pulls its punches with regard to the implication that Maddy and Legs are attracted to each other; these renegades are shown partaking into plenty of violence and crime, but they’re not able to share even one kiss? You would think that the producers could have made this allowance in an R-rated film.
Despite the film’s faults, however, the aforementioned soundtrack’s tunes are well-chosen and atmospheric, particularly in the uses of Mazzy Star’s “Into Dust” and Kristin Hersh’s “Me and My Charms,” the latter of which is incorporated in the film’s impressive final scene that ends on a great crane shot courtesy of cinematographer Newton Thomas Sigel (The Usual Suspects, X-Men, Bohemian Rhapsody) and his crew. It’s also nice to see so many recognizable faces in the supporting cast, including Chris Mulkey, Cathy Moriarty, Peter Facinelli and Dash Mihok in addition to the other actors already listed. Flawed though the film is, Foxfire has enough entertaining components to make me wonder why Annette Haywood-Carter’s directorial career has been limited to just one other feature film and a handful of TV work.
